Chapter 1 The narrator of the story is a young man from Minnesota by the name of Nick Caraway. The audience only sees the story through his views, but he generally is not judgmental which is probably why many people are comfortable to confide. Nick moved to the East coast to learn the bond business because he felt that the west wasn't living up to the social standards he wanted. He moved into a small cottage located in West Egg next to an extremely large mansion. His cousin Daisy and her husband Tom live in East Egg which is where a lot of the old family money is. It is known as the Valley of Ashes. A billboard with two eyes of T.J. Eckelburg watch over this area and everything that happens there. The train passes through this area and makes stops throughout it as well. One day while Nick and Tom are riding the train they get off to go to George Wilson's garage. Tom's lover is George's wife Myrtle. George is a selfless but clueless person who barely has a penny to his name. Tom, Nick and Myrtle travel to the city to the apartment that Tom and Myrtle keep their affair private. Myrtle's sister Catherine comes and eventually the whole group becomes extremely drunk and incapable of coming to reality. Later on Myrtle keeps talking about Daisy and how Tom should just dump her but Tom breaks her nose and tells her to never say Daisy's name ever again. This is almost like a roll call of the country's most wealthy and biggest celebrities. Nick then tells the story of he and Gatsby's trip to New York City for lunch. On their way to the city Gatsby starts explaining to Nick about his mysterious past. Gatsby lists a very detailed set of accomplishments and pulls out items to prove what he says. It was almost as if he had rehearsed the conversation. Gatsby gets pulled over by a policeman for speeding through the Valley of Ashes and driving carelessly. Gatsby shows him a white are and the policeman apologizes for bothering him. All he had to do was show a card, another perk of being Mr. Jay Gatsby. After their encounter with the cop the two go to lunch and Nick is introduced to Gatsby's friend Meyer Wolfsheim. Wolfsheim had cufflinks that were real molars. Nick believed he might be a dentist but that probably isn't the case. Meyer Wolfsheim is rumored to be the man who fixed the World Series. This makes Nick feel like Gatsby's wealth is from shady impractical business. Nick eventually sees Jordan and she tells him about her mysterious conversation with Gatsby and how he told her that he is in love with
