Thematic Thinker – Day 3 Theme A theme present in these two chapters is “Living far away from a loved one can distance your relationship.” Ming and Fitzgerald were very close and met each other often but ever since Ming moved their relationship isn’t what it used to be. They are no longer able to meet each other and they are only able to talk on the phone which isn’t enough to keep their relationship going. Because of the overwhelmingly positive outlook of the market, brokers and investment counselors were aware of the possibilities, and people were eager to profit from a growing market, these men’s advices were treated with importance as their words “became golden”. Chapter one There were many important parts about chapter one. I think that the green light drove the plot the most though. It also had a connection with Gatsby's desire and symbolized it. In the beginning of the book Nick began describing himself.
1. The point I find to be the most crucial to the plot in Chapter 1 is the Buchanan’s blatant unhappiness. Tom is obviously unhappy in his married life because, not only is he restless in the sense that he moves frequently, but he also is having an open affair. Daisy is also obviously unhappy because of the way she so readily opened up to Nick, whom she did not know well despite their familial relation, and in the way she interacted with Tom. Even if I had not read this story before, I would have picked up on the fact that this singular point would be a catalyst to the rest of the plot.
Amanda Michleski English III CP Guadagnino Gatsby Response Journal Chapter 1 Nick introduced himself before telling the story. He seems like he is not very close to his father and that he does not talk to him very much. He says he is not judgmental, since his dad advised him not to be. Even though he listened to his father, he discovers through his life that being judgmental, at least a bit, would be beneficial in certain situations if he was. Everyone wants to confide in Nick, and tell them their problems.
Mislaid Limbs Time is timeless, like a broken clock growling menacingly. As the hours passed, the future receded. Daisy was rested lifelessly, feeling disorientated like a broken doll. Unable to disconnect from the torturous flashbacks encountered when her eyes were closed. Each night, the battle between Daisy’s past and present began, sparking a perplexed disarray of her future, always leaving her with a sick sensation.
1. I think Nick means that everyone in The Great Gatsby somehow falls into falls into one of those categories. He says that they are either pursued, pursuing, busy, or tired. In the pursued class Gatsby and Jordan are involved because they are both being chased by something from their past. Gatsby is very secretive and no one is sure about what has happened in his past, it is easy to think that he is running from something or someone.
This quote appears in the Plaza Hotel during the epic conflict between Gatsby and Tom in which they are both claiming that they are Daisy's love. This is a very pivotal quote in the book. I believe that this quote seems to be the beginning of Daisy deciding to stay with Tom and Gatsby realizing that it is just a “dead dream. ”This passage uses many words that signify that failure of gatsby's attempt to win back Daisy:“slipped away”, “trying to touch what was no longer tangible”, “further and further”, and finally “lost." The fact that he may never be with Daisy is really apparent to Gatsby in this passage, and it seems to be very hard for him.
1. The first chapter in any book is the basis for the entire story. It must lay the foundation of how its literary world will function, providing depth and order. The Great Gatsby is no different as the first chapter introduces the characters and setting for the story. A crucial point is when Tom and Daisy ask Nick about a rumored engagement.
F. Scott Fitzgerald gave every reader a new idea on the 1920s in his book The Great Gatsby. Each symbolic word that he put in to the book give depth to his underline meaning while grabbing the reader's attention. A remaining question that I, as a reader, still havr is what is Fitzgerald’s reasoning on why he wrote this novel in a morbid view of the 20’s. Like many authors, Fitzgerald had used some deal of foreshadowing in his novel. From the symbolic clock in chapter five, to the colors Fitzgerald uses to express emotion.
1. “I am still a little afraid of missing something if I forget that, as my father said snobbishly, and I snobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is parceled out unequally at birth.’ Ch.1 Analysis: nick is tying to say that Money isn’t always what people are born into; especially in this time people who are born into money are considered the upper class and above all. Some people are just a better person in general even without being born into a rich family he doesn’t know if a person has to be born into wealth to have natural class or just be classy on their own.
Daisy however, very heartbroken and anxious to start a family, failed to wait for Gatsby while he was at war and she vulnerably fell in love with Tom and his money. Throughout the time Gatsby was away she grew and developed mentally, leaving him to love someone that no longer existed. When Gatsby says “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!”(Fitzgerald 110)it shows how his imagination has affected his sense of reality. He became lost in the idea that he could get Daisy back and things would automatically return to how they were before he went away.
