Crucible Characterization In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Abigail Williams is indirectly characterized as suspicious and as a threat. The play tells the tragic story of three girls in Salem Massachusetts in 1692 pretending to be witches, and accusing innocent town citizens of being witches and being prosecuted. In the beginning of the play, Abigail is questioned by Reverend Parris numerous times asking, what the girls were doing in the woods late at night, and how and why her daughter could not wake up. After asking numerous times Abigail answers, “ We did dance, uncle..., Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there's the whole of it...we never conjured spirits.” (Miller 10).
