Disability & Sexuality within the Media: Tonight we explored the area of disability and sexuality within the media. How in society people with disabilities are viewed through the media. For instance, should they have a sex life, can they? The question around family and having children, the barriers they may face as a result. We looked at the media’s portrayal of disability and sexuality. Is it appropriate, is it getting the message out there or is it just voyeurism? In today’s society people with either a physical or an intellectual disability are often regarded as non-sexual. In Irish society where it has been said that there was no sex in Ireland before the Late Late Show, discussing sex has long been a taboo subject not a mind sex and disability. The male leader couldn’t believe that she did such a thing and surprised that she would do such a thing. Along with this I could observe his discomfort around what had happened and what he should do about it if anything.
