In Shakespeare's tragedy Othello, Act Three is about dishonesty. The major theme is “what goes around, comes around.” Iago is known for his honesty throughout the whole play and in Act Three, his lies affect other characters. How does lying affect the characters in this Act? Iago’s lying affects various characters in this Act his lies convince Othello that Desdemona is unfaithful, Desdemona is affected as well since Othello gets angry over the missing handkerchief, and Cassio’s reputation is ruined by Iago’s dishonesty. Iago’s lies convince Othello that Desdemona is unfaithful. Othello is puzzled by Iago since Iago seems to be playing games with him. Othello believes that his wife is not unfaithful in their marriage “By the world, I think my wife be honest and think she is not...” (III. iii. 438-439). But, since Iago is always pointing out Cassio and Desdemona. Othello decides to ask Iago to bring him ocular proof. So, Iago makes up a dream about Cassio. He tells Othello that Cassio thought he was with Desdemona, but it was actually Iago, not Desdemona. Cassio’s reputation is affected by Iago’s dishonesty. Iago makes up lies about Cassio and Desdemona that ruin both their reputations. But, Cassio is also unfaithful to his marriage and lies about his secret relationship with Bianca a high-class prostitute who he has been with for a week, behind his wife's back. Othello knows that Cassio is married and tries to keep Bianca a secret. Cassio finds the handkerchief on his bed, but Iago purposely left it there. Cassio asks Bianca to remove the monogram off the handkerchief by saying “Take it, and do’t, and leave me for this time” (III. iv. 219) because he likes the design of the handkerchief.
