Dishonesty is the root of every major conflict in Miller’s The Crucible. Besides the fact that the citizens of Salem live in an area known to vouch for Puritanism, they continue to act out against it. Nearly everyone who is a part of this play is dishonest with themselves and the townspeople, which keeps the trials going. In this compact town an awakening incident alarmed the townspeople to cause chaos and anarchy against accused teen and women witches. When Reverend Samuel Parris witnesses Tituba, their house maid, and a group of girls from the town naked, conspicuously dancing around a fire, he assumed right away witchery and dark entities. Although some were innocent most of them quivered from the guilt within. Aching to tell someone Mary Warren, a small member of the witchcraft group lead by Abigail Williams, had confessed of the girls of not being witches at all. Lie within lie the story becomes more twisted, and Abigail soon becomes forced to throw some, “under the bus.” The most fundamental deception in the play comes from the girls of salem, who lie in order to protect themselves from punishment after being caught. He's not perfect but he is deceitful first for cheating on his wife and then for hiding it, but he is aware of the outcomes of his actions. He and his wife kicked Abigail out of their household and he resists her efforts to lure him back into her bed. The last time he was dishonest was when he said he was with the devil for a short time, after he had signed the contract he re-thought his actions and ripped up the contract becoming pure to honesty once again.
