Shrek is an adored movie about an ogre who lives a life of solitude in his swamp. It is made clear in the beginning of the story that Shrek prefers his privacy and does not like to seek the company of others. However, his life begins to drastically change once he saves the life of a donkey named Donkey. It is unknown how old Donkey is or anything involving his past. One can deduce that his previous owners were not incredible kind to him based on his treatment in the opening scene. The owner is shown striking Donkey when he asked her not to sell her to the soldiers.
Also, it is made known that Donkey is a member of an oppressed group in the society the film is based on. All fairy tale creatures were being rounded up and relocated for purposes only known to Lord Farquad. It can be presumed the characters were being relocated since Lord Farquad discussed how he believed the characters ruined his idea of a perfect kingdom. Early on in the film, Donkey disclosed that he struggles forming relationships and that Shrek is his only friend. Not only does Donkey speak excessively, the character also would blurt out the answer before the question was complete. Throughout the movie, Donkey would attempt to complete Shrek’s sentences before his friend was done speaking. Donkey is likewise depicted to interrupt others and appear to always be on the go.
