The Great Guy Montag! “He had never thought in his life that [fire] could give as well as take” (146). In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, the main character Guy Montag lives in a dystopian society that controls everything. This novel was written in 1995, but it occurs in 2036, in England. In this novel the government controls the community and bans people from reading books. Although Guy Montag starts the novel full of attitude and ignorant, through a series of events, he transforms into a caring person and curious person. Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian society where the government controls everything and everyone. When montag confronted a woman in her house that would die with her books than to get out of the house, it really got him curious and stole a book. It makes him ask question everything about his life. Mildred, his wife, ask him why he became a fireman. “you should of thought that before becoming a fireman.” (51) “Thought! he said. “was i given the choice? My grandfather and father were firemen. In my sleep, I ran after them.”(51) When captain Beatty came to visit Montag, Montag knows that this is common that firemen would steal books on a regular basis. Beatty realizes the signs. Their perfect controlled society isn’t as perfect as they thought it would be. Beatty tells him to take all the time he needs. He gives him a lecture on why society is better without books. Montag knows that happiness and sadness is real and isn't literature. Montag’s comes when he reads to the ladies. from “Dover Beach.” Since he's already being watched, He was trying to tell them that it is feelings are real. “oh god, the way they jabber about people and their own children and themselves and the way they talk to their husbands and they way they talk about war, dammit, I stand here and i can't believe it!
