There are many reasons on why the story of Harrison Bergeron is a dystopian story. One main reason is because the way the government is ran meaning it is a bureaucratic control type government. What this means is it is controlled by mindless bureaucracy through relentless regulations and government officials. This is shown in the part of the story where Harrison was shot mid air by a government official or known as Handicap General. Another way bureaucratic control can be seen is that no one has any free will. It's all controlled. And this example can be seen all throughout the entire story. One ginormous reason why this society is a dystopia is because nobody has free will or free thoughts everyone's the same person essentially. Because nobody is different, everyone is the same, this means no one can do anything different from one another, yes there may be different jobs for everyone to do but there must be ‘handicaps’ to prevent them from doing their job better than anyone else. A good example of this being seen is when the ballerinas was dancing were some had ankle weights and bags over their heads to hide their beauty so they are not better than anyone else. …show more content…

A quote from the text “Two years in prison and two thousand dollars fine for every ball I took out” This is implying that no matter how small or large the issue is the government uses bureaucratic control, they use money to control the people to not taking off their handicaps. Another area in the story they mention to take out a few beads and George says no because he does not want everyone competing like how they did in the old days. The government brainwashed them into seeing this lifestyle good instead of the old lifestyle their parents or grandparents have
