23 January 2023 Empathy will allow us to step in someone else shoes and see the world from there point of view. In literature , empathy can be developed in a character through the circumstances of the plot and guide a characters development. This is seen with the character of Scout in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, and her interactions with other characters throughout the novel.
Compassion can be shown in many different ways. This is shown in Harper Lee Novel To Kill a Mockingbird. “ma’am” or “Miss Mayella” in her life…she took offense to routine courtesy. This is illustrated in the character of Scout in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. “I try to give ‘em a reason , you see . I helps folks if they can latch on to a reason”(Lee 200). Scout thinks Dolphus Raymond is a drunk. But she realized hes pretending to protect his family. Scout learns that judging people can be the wrong thing to do. Empathy can allow friendships to grow where there was once just hate and misunderstanding. This is illustrated in the character of Scout in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. “We were walking past our tree. In it’s knot-hole rested a ball of gray twine” (Lee 58). This affects Scout because he realizes he shouldn’t be scared of Boo Radley anymore. This teaches Scout to think twice about a person before treating them differently. This lesson that Scout learned ended up making the two friends and Scout matured about his views on Boo Radley. Empathy is often evident in literature, as well as in life. This is illustrated with the character of Scout in to Kill a Mockingbird, through her interactions with Miss Mayella, Dolphus Raymond, and Boo Radley. In each of these instances, the character grows and develops because of empathy. As can be seen through Scouts growth, empathy is moving and powerful.
