Another well known lesson taught by Atticus is about empathy. Empathy is defined as: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. This is shown in chapter three when Scout encountered some problems with her new, first grade teacher, Mrs. Caroline. The little girl was mature well beyond her years, therefore, when she was asked to read out loud, Scout read with near perfect fluency. However, the teacher was surprisingly displeased with her advanced level in literature and flow, and assuming it was Atticus who was educating his daughter, Mrs. Caroline wanted the ‘lessons’ to come to a stop.
When Scout is unable to understand why her teacher, Miss Caroline, does not want her to read at home anymore, Atticus wants her to see the situation from Miss Caroline’s point of view. He tells Scout, “If you can learn a simple trick, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (39). The “simple trick” Atticus is talking about is empathy.
These people are good for children to look up to in learning a lesson. Scout and Jem each know some people to look up to when it comes to empathy. In chapter 8, Atticus tells the kids, “Someday, maybe, Scout can thank him for covering her up” (pg 72). This happened after Mrs. Maudie’s house burnt down. During the disaster, the kids watched from afar.
Scout is not the only character who uses empathy to help and understand others in the book. Helen Robinson, Tom’s wife, was jobless after the trial and, with children to feed, she desperately needed a job. So, in an effort to not let the Robinson family feel forgotten, Mr. Link Deas, Tom’s former employer, took mercy on Helen and gave her a job, even though he didn’t really need her. He just felt bad that things had turned out the way they did, thus using empathy to interpret and assist with the Robinson family’s situation
In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, examples of empathy are abundant and constitute much of the novel. Out of the many examples, three of them will be discussed. Empathetic practice is one of the first ideas Atticus explains to Scout in the novel. In the third chapter of the novel, Atticus states “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb in his skin and walk around in it.” This point is reiterated on several occasions by Atticus.
In the book TKAM Atticus and his children and their good friend Boo Radley show how to judge right from wrong, show empathy and show compassion towards other people and themselves. Atticus shows fairness, braveness, and kindness which best shows empathy.

In Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" a small town is plagued with the misconception of the separation between Negroes and Caucasian people that results in the prosecution of two innocent men, Tom Robinson and Arthur Radley, who were treated inhumanly because of other people's beliefs on who were. To me the word empathy in “To Kill A Mockingbird” means “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.” Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” suggests that empathy is a universal feeling, but everyone experiences it in different occasions and in different ways. Many people empathize through real life experiences. Scout is one of those people.
Understanding Empathy in To kill a Mockingbird After dinner Atticus & Scout go to the porch to read when Scout brings up her troubles at school. Atticus then advises Scout with a way to better understand people. Lee writes, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view–until you climb into his skin & walk around in it”(15). I believe this quote serves as a way for Scout to grow, for her to learn & understand the different levels of empathy she can share with someone. It’s also important as it speaks to the reader, we learn more on empathy through Scout as the story progresses.
To Kill A Mockingbird, a novel based of the American south, shows lack of empathy between individuals by showing the animosity between Scout and her classmate, Walter Cunningham. At school, Scout was put into a situation where she was pressurized to defend Walter Cunningham when Miss Caroline Fisher, Scout’s first grade teacher, was giving Walter a quarter when he said he did not want it. After telling Miss Caroline Fisher Walter why Walter did not want the quarter, Scout got yelled at by Miss Caroline Fisher. Because Scout got yelled at, she started feeling animosity towards angry and “...stomped at him to chase him away”. Written by Harper Lee, "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a fictional story that takes place in the static city of Maycomb during a time filled with racial injustice. What starts of being a tale of a group of children having fun and playing silly games quickly turns into a captivating and dramatic story filled with the crisis of conscience, racial grievance, and a battle between a lawyer and his family against what seems like the rest of the world. This novel demonstrates many themes throughout it's assortment of lovable characters, one of the main themes displayed by these characters is empathy. Empathy cannot be grasped, but is always there for people who can, “climb into people’s skin and walk around,”(39) as constantly repeated by Atticus Finch, throughout Harper Lee’s novel. “To Kill a Mockingbird” distinctly depicts empathy through Scout and Jem, as they learn to step into people’s skin and perceive their predicament. Russell Freedman in his nonfictional passage, “Freedom Walkers” directly shows how people were affected negatively by racism and how that was unacceptable. However, he does not give readers a thorough understanding of empathy, as it is ineffective to spark action to readers in comparison to the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” In both stories, people are persecuted by others for their race or on premature biases.
Empathy is something we all have, but do not always demonstrate. Treating someone with empathy will not fix everything, but it can make people feel like they belong. Maturity is a lesson provided from experiences. As children age they’re faced with more challenges to overcome and can experience a new reality. In chapter 12 of To Kill a Mockingbird in which Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout (both white) to the “First Purchase African M.E. Church”, author Harper Lee uses dialogue and imagery to develop the theme of empathy to understand what it’s like to be judged based on the color of one's skin. For instance, by witnessing the dialogue between Calpurnia and Lula, Scout and Jem begin to realize the true feeling of unwelcomeness.
