In the 1986 novel Under A Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968. Is based off of the actual events that occurred in the authors Heda Margolius Kovaly’s ife. The memoir explains her struggle of escaping during the Holocaust and surviving during WW2 under the totaliariat rule of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. In post war Czechleslovakia many of it’s citizens embraced the idea of a communist society. Utilizing the information given in Kovaly’s memoir and the textbook, I believe most citizens were embracing towards communisim because they (the citizens) were under the impression that the democracy let the Nazi party take over and failed to defend the country against Hitler.
To Kill A Mockingbird was definitely worth the read. Yes I did admit that. Harper Lee does an amazing job expressing themes throughout the book. I chose empathy, and to me empathy is when we consider eachothers attitudes and situations from another viewpoint and identify another perspective to an issue. In the book, Scout learns empathy, Atticus teaches empathy and Tom needs empathy.
Empathy is a quality difficult to attain. Not many people can really look through the eyes of someone else most of us are sympathetic. Empathy is almost a rare feeling how often are you going to feel empathy for the syrian refugees or children in Africa? It’s hard to feel empathy for things that we haven't experienced. But in every bundle of people their is an Atticus Finch.
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee portrays acts of kindness and generosity given to many characters throughout the book in selfless ways. For example, as Jem and Scout are walking down the sidewalk, they continuously find small gifts such as gum, soap, pennies, and a watch in the knothole of the Radley’s tree. Miss Maudie gives Jem and Scout cakes and advice. Calpernia provides a mother figure, discipline, and life lessons for the children. As the town of Maycomb is falling apart from segregation and racism, Atticus steps up to open the eyes of the city.
He shows Jem and Scout not to judge people until they've walked in their shoes. Chapter 3 on page 85-87 Atticus says "First of all, if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.” Out of all the people in this book Atticus is the one who is most likely to not judge someone. He stands up for a black man knowing he will get judged and made fun of.

It is very important that writers are able to send a message to their reader with their book. Authors best do this by bringing about empathy. In order to send this message, authors often develop strong characters that go through various problems and struggles. The book, To Kill a Mockingbird, shows this very well with its characters Scout Finch and Tom Robinson. This book helps the readers learn from the character’s reactions to their problems.
This quote relates to morality because it portrays how society was like several years ago. Morality is the ability to decipher what’s right and wrong to establish the truth. For instance, racism took a huge part in the county as many white citizens bestride over the negroes to show power. During the case with Tom Robinson, Atticus was able to provide substantial evidence to prove that Tom Robinson was not guilty regardless of what the other witnesses had said. However, since the jury consisted primarily of white race, the final verdict was announced as guilty.
You never know what someones going through until you step into their shoes and walk around in them. Empathy by definition is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It is often developed through exposure to other peoples' worlds. Among the many other lessons in To Kill A Mockingbird empathy is one of the most prominent in the book. After reading one can truly come to the conclusion that loss of innocence can lead one to develop empathy, when they see the mistreatment of others.

My topics were how is empathy demonstrated or learned by Atticus, How is Empathy demonstrated by Scout and How is empathy demonstrated or learned by Jem. How is empathy shown throughout the characters among the storyline? Atticus believes that not only black people but everyone deserves a fair go whether it's a court case or not.
Individuality means the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind. Independence means freedom from control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others ("The Definition Of Independence"). Within the three texts that I chose for my project, a person can see many examples of individuality; including Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird, Lily Owens from The Secret Life of Bees, and from the character A in Every Day. All of these characters show that fear can only limit your potential if you allow it to. They also show that to become an individual one must develop independence, and not follow the influence of others.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. To me the word empathy in “To Kill A Mockingbird” means “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.” Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” suggests that empathy is a universal feeling, but everyone experiences it in different occasions and in different ways. Many people empathize through real life experiences. Scout is one of those people.
