Within the book To Kill A Mockingbird the narrator is a little girl by the name of Scout. She lives in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama where there’s so much excitement and drama. Throughout the book the little girl Scout and her older brother Jeremy, known as Jem, go through many challenges and events such as trying to find out the secrets of the Radley’s. The biggest obstacle they face is the fact that their father, they refer to as Atticus, has to defend a man of color as he has been accused of rape. The theme, as know the not told life lesson learned throughout the book, was you should treat people with respect and have empathy for others. Throughout the book To Kill A Mockingbird there is many examples of where people do not show respect and empathy. One example is during their Christmas visit to the family landing where her cousin Francis had no respect for her father and called him a “‘Nigger-lover’” (Harper 110). This was only because he was fairly defending a man who deserved to be treated fairly. Atticus had shown empathy for the man even though, he had no choice but to defend him. Aunt Alexandra comes to live with them while the trial is coming up. She is some what a racist person who does not believe that Calpurnia should be their cook anymore for as she is a person of color. “Atticus’s voice was even: ‘Alexandra, Calpurnia’s not leaving this house until she wants to…’”(182).
