An author writes a story for a reason, whether it’s to get an idea across to a reader or to even help better themselves as a person. In short stories, it’s a lot easier to get your point across quickly. The author uses the short time that they have to have the main character of the story have an epiphany. An epiphany is the manifestation of a divine or supernatural being. This basically means that the main character of the story has a divine moment where they realize that something in their life really needs to change. Sometimes it can be a little too late. This can be seen in the short story “Cons” and “Desiree’s Baby”. The story “Desiree’s Baby” is about two people who have a baby. Everything seems fine and dandy and perfect, but then her husband, Armand started acting weird. He got upset easily and would always be mad. After a while, Armand had started to notice that the baby didn’t seem to look like him. The baby had a darker complexion than Armand and Desiree. In the case of the book “Desiree’s Baby” the epiphany that Armand had made him rethink about the way that he used to act. The fact that he had lost his wife and child all because he thought that she was African American when it was actually him. But then there’s the epiphany that Lisa had in “Cons” instead of it making her change the way that she acted, it made her think in a different way. Before she thought that the father of the young girl was a monster for writing all of those hateful notes to Kyle, but after seeing the daughter, feeling what it would be like to have a daughter, she started thinking about what it would be like to lose her own child and it changed the way that she had thought about everything that happened.
