Today, advancement in technology and great improvement in the standards of living is posing major challenges to administrators of various organizations. This is because younger employees prefer to work in environments that have a very high level of freedom, technologically up-to-date, friendly and casual, and neat and orderly. Due to civilization, younger employees have body piercings, tattoos and body arts with dress code that are putting their leaders in great dilemma since they may not know what to do when faced with such cases. Being a police officer, Newton should have been aware that having the swastika tattoo would lead to friction between him and a large number of the other employees/police officers. In addition to that, he should have been aware that the tattoo of a nude woman on his other arm can be extremely offensive to the other female officers and all women in the society. In the summer uniform, the tattoos are visible, according to the captain. This is unethical, as officers who get tattoos need to be responsible and cover their inks with plain clothes or their uniforms. When not covered, these tattoos will make him look like a thug, demonstrate unprofessionalism and even lead to poor judgement. As a result of this, the credibility of the justice department might be undermined. Newton is aware that disrespecting leaders is not good, but he speaks to the police chief in a sarcastic manner. Newton getting tattoos, makes him a problem employee. At the same time, however, Newton is absolutely right, because he has every right to freely express himself and the right to liberty, hence here, problem situation comes in (Peak, …show more content…

Unfortunately, at times, it is a task that has to be done. For Newton’s case, I am not sure if there is any action that I would be able to take. This is because currently, there is no policy that prohibits the displaying of any tattoo by employees within the department. The action that I would take is call Newton, sit with him and talk to him and even explain to him the impact the tattoos are having on the other officers. I would also explain to him the potential effect that the tattoo can have on him if the offended officers stick to their words and fail to respond to any of his calls for service with him. At the same time, I would remind the other officers of the consequences they are likely to face if they do not support a co-worker. Their personal opinions of a fellow officer need to be kept outside the work environment. They should fulfil their duties and responsibilities of their job throughout, regardless of who they are protecting or helping and the feeling they have about a fellow officer (Pollock, 2012).

When considering disciplinary actions, the possible ramifications or issues I should be aware of, are discrimination allegations or lawsuits filed with “the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission” (Peak, 2012). In order to prevent all these from happening, individuals or organizations
