Libby Loynachan Mrs. Audrey Elsinger Honors Sophomore English January 23 2023 Antony’s Speech I chose Antony’s speech because I felt like he was more effective at persuading the audience and getting them to believe what he is saying. I believe that since he was not putting down the conspirators it made the people believe that he was a good person and that he is not biased in his speech. I feel like his speech is truly coming from his heart and felt genuine and it was full of emotions for Ceasar. He mentioned the reasons why Ceasar was a good and respectable person. He also refers to Ceasar’s murderers as honorable men. The use of ethos in this speech was when Ceasar referred to the crowd as “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!” (act 3, scene 2, line 69.) This shows that Antony is referring to the people as his friends before anything else. He does this to earn the people’s trust and to make him come across as a friendly person. This was effective to the audience because it made him seem trustworthy and the people believed him. Constantly throughout the speech, Antony is questioning the ethos of Brutus. This is making the audience feel sad and mourn Ceasar because they realize that Brutus’s definition of Ceasar being “ambitious” must not be true. Also when Antony says “What cause withholds you then to mourn for him” (act 3, scene 2, line 99)? He is saying that the people should not be rejoicing in his death because he was a good person and it is only right to pay their respect to him.
