Often times in un-scholarly writing, writers will use Aristotle’s ways or persuasion. He found the origins of persuasion and named them ethos, logos, and pathos. When an author uses ethos, they are trying to establish their credibility. This helps the reader trust what the author is saying. Logos is the appeal to logic. For example, the author might provide statistics or cite factual information. Pathos appeals to people’s emotions. This is the easiest and most used way of persuasion. It is simple and effective to play on people’s emotions, which is why politicians also use pathos. During the 2016 presidential election, all of the candidates use all modes of persuasion in their social media. Journalists also use it to mold people’s opinion especially during election time. Since this is an online article accessible to anyone, it is not necessarily “scholarly.” In most cases, one would have to do some background research on the journalists. In this case, there is a short background sentence at the end of the article about Samsudin and Soon. Ethos is not only found in one’s background but also in the language they use for the topic they are speaking on. The language and vocabulary used in the article is very average. The vocabulary is not confusing or hard to understand, but it also would not make anyone stop and have to use context clues to figure it
