Paper 2: Exploratory Essay I chose to research the debate about whether eating meat is ethical. There are many different stances on the issue both for and against meat eating. I was personally drawn to this topic upon reflecting upon why people eat what they do and the relatively little thought people put into what food they consume. The majority of people seem to mindlessly eat whatever social norms dictate. I find the topic reflects a larger societal issue that individuals often go with the flow or follow expectations rather than contemplate the reason and consequence of their individual actions. For Summary-Response 1, I used the introduction of “Food For Thought,” by Steve F. Sopontzis. I choose this particular source because it provides a basis for understanding common debates about eating meat and various viewpoints from those against eating meat. I found Sapontzis’ writing to be straightforward and I was not especially surprised by any of the information, but I did strongly agree with his arguments. This source strengthened my views that eating meat is unethical. I used Andrew Tardiff’s article, “Simplifying the Case for Vegetarianism” as my source for Summary-Response 2. This article argues that the inhumane treatment of animals is nethical but not neccarily the raising and slaughtering of animals for food. I chose this source to provide yet another viewpoint on the subject that lies more in the grey area than the other sources. This article was insightful and contained a moderate approach. Nothing in the article came as a huge shock but I did strongly agree with Engster’s argument against the inhumane treatment of animals. After an analysis of this article I became aware of more points of view and reasonable arguments for ethical consumption of
