H.Jackson Brown Jr, once said, “Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring and integrity, they think of you.” In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, characters help define what fairness is. Fairness treating each other with equitability, what they deserve. There is various examples of this throughout the book. In Part one of To Kill a Mocking Bird, one lesson learned is that one should do the fair even if people disagree with it. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus shows integrity when he is given the responsibility of representing Tom Robinson. While having a discussion with Scout Atticus says, “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town. I couldn’t represent this county in the legislator. I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” ( Lee 75 ). Atticus is giving Scout the lesson that he has to do what he feels is fair and right because if he doesn’t, he couldn’t live with himself. One should the right thing even if it means going through some tough times, the alternative, is humilation within oneself which is much worse than what others can say.
