Recommended: Figurative language in a literary work
The author uses figurative language to strengthen the poem by adding more detail. He explains what things feel like,sound like,look like, and even taste like. Without figurative language the writing would be boring and short.the imagery describes how the setting looked and gave the reader more knowledge. The figurative language in the third section of Inside Out and Back Again gives us a deeper understanding of the book. It shows a look into Ha’s thought process, how uncomfortable she is in America, and how she prefers Vietnam to the US. The first example of figurative language is on page 140, where Ha spells her teacher's name; MiSSS SSScot. She is purposely misspelling her teacher's name to exaggerate the “S”. It gives us a deeper look into Ha’s understanding of English, and her thought process when coming to it.
De ‘Crevecoeur uses an subjective positive tone to describe his view of America, and a negative tone to describe Europe, both of which convey his vision of the New World. Throughout this work, he describes both areas in ways that cannot be proven to be entirely factual, and thus are his views and opinions. This can be seen first in the passage; “If he travels through our rural districts he views not the hostile castle and haughty mansion, contrasted with the clay-built hut ad miserable cabin” (310). De ‘Crevecoeur did not live in these two extremes of society in Europe, and therefore doesn’t have personal evidence to back up his claims. In addition, he uses subjective adjectives like hostile, haughty, and miserable.
Option B uses figurative language to describe the image shown above. The example I have identified, option B, is figurative language because it uses a device called a metaphor. A metaphor is a comparison of two different things that show how they are the same. Option B uses a metaphor because it compares a group of protesters to a swarm of bees demanding attention instead of a fly that could be ignored.

Jaycee uses a lot of figurative language throughout the novel especially, when she is describing her abduction and having sex with Philip. “I hear the crackling sound and I feel paralyzed” (Dugard 9). She uses onomatopoeia to mimic the sound of the stun gun to enrich her text. The effect of her using figurative language is the reader better understands what is happening.
Most well written and descriptive stories use many disparate tools to make it better. The author of the story The Veldt used figurative language, imagery, and diction to foreshadow the tragic ending of the story. In the end the children use the lions from Africa to slaughter their parents ,and you can kind of guess that the children are planning something evil because of the descriptions and figurative language in the story. The children give off a very negative aura throughout the whole story that leads you to believe that something cynical is occuring.
1. The line “We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear, and government surplus food” is a hyperbole and zeugma. The word that creates the zeugma is the word lived, as the narrator uses the word lived to mean different things in the same context. The narrator actually lived off of paychecks and government food, but did not literally live off of hope and fear like the line suggests. The line is also a hyperbole because the author did not literally live off of the hope and fear, as you cannot sustain yourself with emotions.

If society takes the time to analyze these actions, individuals can figure out the feelings of one another in a certain moment. “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson delineates the thoughts and feelings of a teenage girl, Melinda, as she navigates the highs and lows of high school, while carrying the weight of a past traumatic event. In the passage from the book, “Speak”, author Laurie Halse Anderson uses different types of figurative language such as similes and metaphors, as well as repetition to reveal Melinda’s negative thoughts on her past and current feelings about high school.
Figurative language is the use of words. Simile, “ The way you grow old is kind of like an onion or like the rings inside a tree trunk or like my little wooden dolls that fit one inside other.” She is comparing growing up to these items because just like onions or trees or dolls, each year is inside the next one. One literary device used is onomatopoeia. The phrase is “The tree swayed briefly, it 's torn wood screaming, it 's wings beating as if for flight” (Hutchinson, line 36-37). It is significant because in this phrase, Hutchinson uses the sounds to explain how the destruction of the tree sounds like. The words screaming is used to explain the sound of tree trunk being torn apart while the word beating is used to describe that the tree branch is flying away from the tree itself, as it is getting destroyed.

Maus is about a man talking to his son after the war sharing his story of the Holocaust and trying to survive. It uses illustrations to show emotions and to move the story forward. “Often a Minute” is a poem about the Holocaust and the struggles that Jews went through. These two stories are very similar but their themes have minor differences. While Maus and “Often a Minute” talk about the struggles of the Holocaust, they differ in that Maus portrays the theme through illustrations while the poem uses figurative language to describe the horrors of the Holocaust.
Mark Twain said, “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time”. Death is inevitable and no matter how hard we try; its presence is never fully forgotten. While examining both Mark Twain and William Cullen Bryant lives, we see that they exceled in their areas of expertise and enjoyed the lemons that were handed to them. They both made many statements about life, of which time cannot deteriorate their importance and value.
Many people praise and mourn about different things, mostly stuff they like very dearly. Except that mourning is being sad over something they lost that meant alot to one. In the poem “One Art” Elizabeth Bishop evokes praise, mockery and mourning, by using language that shows a carefree tone and a passionate mood. She also fulfills her purpose by utalyzing repetition in her structure.
