Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech is a masterpiece of rhetorical persuasion, which employs various techniques to convey his message effectively. In the speech, Henry addresses the Virginia Convention to urge them to take action against the British government's increasing tyranny. One of the rhetorical techniques Henry employs is the use of emotional appeals to stir the audience's passions and arouse their patriotic sentiments. For example, he employs a metaphor to convey the gravity of the situation by comparing the British government's actions to that of a thief. Henry also employs logical appeals to support his arguments, using facts and evidence to prove the inevitability of war and the need for action.

In the end, after all the arguments, he restated and emphasized the main theme of his speech. There are several rhetorical devices he used.
On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry, a Virginia Lawyer, used rhetorical devices in his speech “Give me Liberty or give me Death!”. The rhetorical devices created an emotional and powerful speech. It motivates the Virginia house members to raise a militia to fight against the British army. Rhetorical devices are a patterns of ideas that stir the emotions, create an emphasis by repetition, and persuades the audience to action.
There are many different rhetorical devices used in famous speeches. What is a rhetorical device? A rhetorical device is a method to enhance the overall content of a speech. For example, rhetorical questions, parallelism, repetition, ethos, pathos, and logos. Patrick Henry's speech to the Virginia Convention was to persuade colonial ideas against negotiating with England, he believed that the colonists should pull away from the British ruling and create their own country.

Two nights before a great battle to retake France’s land, King Henry of England disguises himself as a common soldier to discover the sentiment of his army. However, outnumbered and afraid of dying, the men tells the disguised King Henry about their reluctance to head into battle. Consequently, the next day, King Henry decides to raise his army’s morale through a speech. King Henry begins by appealing to the men’s sense of logic, using logos to argue that no more men are needed for the battle: “If we are mark’d to die, we are enow / to do our country loss; and if to live, / the fewer men, the greater share of honour”

Through rhetorical questions, Henry was able to emphasize his points, and grab the audience’s attention, creating an emotional effect on the listeners. “Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation?” These statements prove the speaker’s argument and stir the audience’s emotions.

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Hamlet struggles to cope with his late father’s death and his mother’s quick marriage. In Act 1, Scene 2, King Claudius, Queen Gertrude, and Hamlet are all introduced. Hamlet has just finished publicly speaking with his mom and the new king, and after he is interrupted by his good friend Horatio, who reveal the secret about King Hamlet’s ghost. Hamlet’s soliloquy is particularly crucial because it serves as his initial characterization, revealing the causes of his anguish. Hamlet’s grief is apparent to the audience, as he begins lamenting about the uselessness of life.
Patrick Henry Argument Analysis Throughout Patrick Henry’s speech, he uses many literary devices to convey his thought and opinions to his audience, and with it, he hopes to alter or sway their views on the subject matter. Starting from the very end of Henry's speech, he states “but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”, this now infamous line uses the logical fallacy of false dilemma. This fallacy, also known as either/or, plays to his advantage as it makes the problem seem greater than it actually is by only presenting two extreme options, liberty or death. Another literary device Henry uses in his speech, is ethos, which appeals to the audience's moral or ethical plane.
In language, regardless of dialect, nationality, being written in literature or not, emotion is a component of language felt and displayed constantly. All words and phrases come with connotations and in any shape or form, emotion is always dispersed throughout language. In the work of one of the best at writing emotion in language, William Shakespeare holds many emotions within his writing at all times. A well rounded and sufficient example of this is his beautifully crafted play, Hamlet. In the play, Shakespeare utilizes the uses of metaphors, tone, and parallel structure to further Hamlet’s emotions of love, anger, and despair throughout the play.
