During World War II, the German Reich marched across the entire continent of Europe. During the Holocaust, many people became discouraged and lost hope in the future of society. However, the excerpts from “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl,” written by herself, and “Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler’s Shadow” by Susan Campbell Bartoletti, prove that being positive and persevering is the best thing that someone can do. Whether hiding from the Nazis or already taken by them, the best response to have during conflict and chaos is maintaining a positive outlook on life and to persist through difficult times.
An example from the text would be “They ran it all like a factory.” The impact of figurative language was used to show that the germans thought it was okay to kill people because they weren’t like them, pure german. In the year 1933, the persecution of Jews and their families due to the holocaust had begun. Hitler had come to power, and made Nazi Germany believe the Jews were the problem. The Jewish families were forced into hiding or else they would be taken away to concentration camps or killed. One of the families in 1945, being persecuted were the Franks. Anne Frank was 13 when they moved into the hidden annex above Mr. Kralers office building.
Figurative language is essential to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because it makes the story sound more mature. For instance, in the story it talks about how Anne is debating whether to burn the Star of David or to keep it. During the time of hiding, Anne kept a diary to write down all her thoughts, fears, and feelings and was later known to be the most important piece of literature from the times of the Holocaust. The story takes you through their everyday lives of hiding in the annex which also includes arguing and times of happiness.
