Conflict: Exposing The Hidden Flaws In Society A dystopia can be difficult to spot unless a conflict occurs. A dystopian society is a society that seems perfect when it has flaws. A stereotype for a dystopia is that it is futuristic when in reality, it can happen at any time. To be labeled as a dystopian society, a society needs to have one or more dystopian traits. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the narrator is in a dystopia because her husband dehumanizes her. She is not allowed to leave the house and is called childish nicknames. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep showcases a world after a World War. Most species have gone extinct and the world is unpleasant to live in. There is radioactive dust filling the planet and most people are moving to Mars. When the main character, Deckard, steps outside his apartment, the scene is described as, “The morning air, spilling over with radioactive motes, gray and sun-beclouding, belched about him, haunting his nose; he sniffed involuntarily the taint of death,” (Dick 8). Radioactivity is affecting the people who stay on the planet too. Some people have little to no effect, others have brain damage, and others die from the effects. Dick uses his story to showcase what will happen if the world is not cared for. The world is mistreated already. People throw their trash where they feel like, people drive cars and this puts more harmful chemicals into the planet, and wars constantly cause destruction and harmful radiation. In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Isidore is dehumanized because of his distorted genes that were caused by radiation. Due to these genes, he is labeled as a “chickenhead” and a “special” by society. He is not allowed to move to Mars because he is mentally behind the average population. When speaking with someone, Isidore thinks to himself, “If he finds out I’m a chickenhead he won’t talk to me; that’s always the way it is for some reason. I wonder why?” (Dick 25). Dick was pointing out the societal flaw of discrimination. People are often discriminated against for being different from the societal norm. Most of the time, people are discriminated for things they cannot control, such as skin color, gender, sexuality, and disability. Isidore in the story is mistreated by society because of how he was affected by the radiation. He had no control over this and is still mistreated.
