Foreshadowing In Mystery
In the book And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, ten guests are invited to an island for a ¨getaway¨ when a strange audio message accuses them all of horrific murders. That very night one of the guests died. Each night and day following more guests die until there is no one left. Agatha Christie's use of Foreshadowing throughout the novel involves the reader in the story and creates dramatic tension; she does this by giving hints about future events in a vague and sometimes misleading manner. One example from the book that supports this is: ¨One Little soldier boy left all alone he went and hanged himself and then there were none¨ (Green) This is the last line from the poem hanging in each of the guests rooms. A poem that foreshadows the deaths of each of the guests in one way or another. This quote relates to involving the reader in a story because this is the line of the poem that refers to the death of Vera. This was foreshadowed earlier in the book before her death by the hook in her room: ¨She didn't like that hook on the ceiling. The element of foreshadowing in Agatha Christie's novel And Then There Were None makes the story an exceptional example of a mystery novel because it creates tension and involves the reader in the story. The first body paragraph is about engaging a reader in a story and Agatha Christie does this perfectly through her use of foreshadowing throughout the book, supported by Reader Figures in Narrative by Paul Goetsch. For example the hook in Vera's room that foreshadows her death. If a reader was paying close attention they may be able to know what happens later on just from a bit of foreshadowing. The second body paragraph is about tension in writing and the elements of tension. It also includes how tenison puts you in the place of character and keeps you glued to the book wanting to read more supported by What is Dramatic Tension by Ross Hartman. Like when Mr. Blore was on the train and we learn from the author directly that he will die. Foreshadowing in And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie is what makes the book such a good example of a mystery novel. Her use of tension as well as her ability to keep the reader engaged throughout the novel is what makes And Then There Were None such a great
