Michael is a normal kid, except for the fact that he lives in Berlin, Germany, WWII. While there is an air raid, where bombs are dropping from the sky, Michael has to bring the pilot out of the city. He was supposed to meet him at 3:45. He looks at his watch, “3:15…3:27…3:45…4:02, I was very late now”(Alan 190-202). He is fighting with his team to save the people in the air raid chambers, manning his station, and checking his watch. He sacrificed the pilot to save the people. He was able to keep his role and spot on the team, but could have lost the pilot. Later once the pilot returns home they are talking about how Michael can get on the team. They come to a conclusion, they need to sacrifice the pilot. Although against it, Michael goes with it, and later that week when he was acting like he was trying to escape, “Simon fell…he’s dead”(Alan 248).
