Romano Brown Mrs. Gump Honors English / Language Arts 5/12/2023 Romeo & Juliet Essay What is the most important plot device in Romeo & Juliet? If you asked me, I would say it’s foreshadowing. Why? Well, I believe this because line 6 on page 698 states; “A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life”. This line foreshadows the ending of the story where both of our main characters commit suicide. It’s extremely important because it warns the reader about the unfortunate events that are about to unfold. Most people know the story of Romeo & Juliet; so coming across this line is a bit of a grim revelation. Line 8 on page 698 states, “Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.” which also foreshadows both families making amends at the end …show more content…

Juliet spouts some quips of her own such as this one, “O God, I have an ill-divining soul! Methinks I see thee, now thou art so low, As one dead in the bottom of a tomb.” (Shakespeare 767) This is yet another instance of foreshadowing in the story and it occurs during the scene where Juliet bids farewell to Romeo after their first night together as a married couple. Juliet felt way too at ease and it felt eerie to her, she has a suspicion that something horrendous might happen to Romeo and that it might be the last time she will see him alive. This again is prophetic as she and Romeo are distanced soon afterward. The only time Juliet sees Romeo again is in the tomb after he has poisoned himself and is lying dead next to her. We’ve been through about 5 examples of foreshadowing and we aren’t even finished with the essay! Shakespeare is the hammer and your brain is the nail, he is quite literally hammering the foreshadowing into your head. At various instances, throughout the story, he provides inklings of predictions to keep the reader on their toes. This is why I believe foreshadowing is the most important plot device in Romeo &
