In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” written in 1846, he uses foreshadowing to show Fortunato’s misfortunes which eventually lead to his death. However, foreshadowing is one of the technique to the suspense that carries through the story and attains this through the language that generates a sense of place as well as foreboding. Montresor confides to the reader that he has told his servants he won’t be home until morning, knowing that they would leave to go to the carnival. As mentioned in the story that “It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend” (Poe 391). He decides to seek revenge; however, in a measured technique, without placing himself at a risk. Therefore, Montresor has deliberately planned for this meeting by sending his servants away to the carnival. In addition, he ensures that Fortunato will follow him into the wine cellar by playing on his pride, and by informing him not to leave. Once Montresor has lured his enemy Fortunato deep into the catacombs, Montresor reveals a trowel which he has carefully hidden beneath his cloak. The author illustrates the reader through the quote that “I said, replacing the tool beneath the cloak, and again offering him my arm. He leaned upon it heavily. We continued our route in search of the Amontillado” (Poe 394). According to the story, Montresor himself is doing a little drink along with Fortunato, so his slightly peculiar behavior, includes showing Fortunato his trowel. In addition, he pretends to be a Mason, but in actual he wasn’t a Mason. Also, Montresor is under pressure to get Fortunato off the street and down
