Throughout the short story, The Cask of Amontillado, the author, Edgar Allan Poe, displays countless literary devices that create a specific effect. These devices help create a suspenseful and interesting story for the readers. Without these devices, the story, would not be as compelling and engaging as it would be with the devices. The literary elements allow the reader to analyze and interpret the text and make it more exhilarating for the reader. In the story, point of view, irony and foreshadowing are present. Together, they create specific effects that help produce the magnificent story. The Cask of Amontillado is told through first person point of view. This allows the reader to know what the narrator was thinking and feeling throughout the story. When first person is being told, the story is generally about the narrator. “I was so pleased to see him, that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand” (Poe 372). This quote is explaining what the narrator thought when he was encountering Fortunato, which proves it’s first person. The author’s use of first person allows the reader to know what the narrator, Montresor, is thinking throughout the entire story. Foreshadowing in literature is when there an intimation about something that is going to occur later in the story. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe 372). This quote is explaining what the narrator is going to seek upon Fortunato. It is explaining that Fortunato has injured him a thousand times, but when he insulted him, he declared revenge. This is foreshadowing Montresor’s plan and intentions toward Fortunato.
