Edgar Allan Poe is one of the best at writing stories in a dark or creepy way. The mood of Poe’s short story, “The Cask of Amontillado”, is suspense. He creates this suspense by the use of the setting, foreshadowing, and Montresor’s character throughout the book. Poe makes the catacombs dark and creepy which makes the setting help provoke the suspense of the story. Poe also creates foreshadowing throughout the book which creates tension in the story. Poe creates Montresor’s character cunning, secretive, and evil which helps create the suspense in the story. Poe is able to create and sustain a suspenseful mood in “The Cask of Amontillado” using setting, foreshadowing, and the characterization of Montresor. As Montresor leads Fortunato down deeper and deeper into the catacombs Fortunato's coughing seems to be getting worse. “Come, we will go back; your health is precious” Montresor says to Fortunato but he would not and replies with “Enough, the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough” as for Fortunato did not want to turn back (Poe 7). This represents a foreshadow because Fortunato does not believe he will die not knowing Montresor plans to kill him. As they continue down the catacombs they reach upon their destination. Once upon their destination Montresor makes his final move and chains Fortunato to the ground. Then Montresor starts to build up a wall to trap him in. As Montresor finishes up his wall he hears something among the noise and stops to listen “Ha! ha! ha!-he! he! he!-a very good joke, indeed-an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo-he! he! he!-over our wine-he! he! he!” said Fortunato thinking all of this was a joke (Poe 10). But really it was not a joke, and Montresor was planning to kill Fortunato deep inside the eerie catacombs.
