In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Charlotte Perkins Gilman interprets foreshadowing, imagery, and symbolism and other literary devices to express one's own experiences with the wallpaper. In this short story Gilman talks about her own experiences by talking about it through first person and identifies herself as the character. Now Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is going through a temporary depression that within time is making her go mad. She describes the pattern, and how ugly the color was as well. The imagery that Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is very graphic and descriptive on the yellow wallpaper in the room. Even, though Charlotte Perkins Gilman does mention many times about how the wallpaper looked like. “It is like a woman stooping down and creeping about..” Gilman is describing of how the wallpaper looked like, and as if there was a woman that would creep on her at night. Gilman is frightened about the woman, and keeps this fear to herself. Another thing that Charlotte Perkins Gilman uses to show imagery is the scent that she smells. “But there is something else about that paper - the smell! It creeps all over the house. I find it in the dining-room, skulking in the parlor, hiding in the hall.. ” Charlotte Perkins Gilman tries to put an image into the reader's mind by showing that a smell is a scent not something one can see; but one can imagine. “The faint figure behind seemed to shake the pattern…” Gilman paints a picture by describing about how she sees the woman shakes the paper.
