Romeo and Juliet: Friar Lawrence is the villain of the play. In Shakespeare Friar Lawrence is known as the priest who eventually is responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet. Then some people may assume that he is the bad guy, the villain for marrying them from the begging, and later on complicating everything and causing several deaths.
“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” The tragic story of Romeo and Juliet was caused by the mistakes of Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence developed a plan that would allow Romeo and Juliet to be together. However, Friar Laurence did not realize that his plan would have to go perfectly in order to be effective in a positive way. Friar Laurence made four crucial mistakes in his plan that would lead to the death of Romeo and Juliet.

Friar was only trying to bind the two families together and out of their feud, but honestly, he did not consider the risk factors. Friar Lawrence also gave Juliet the potion that did not kill her, but clearly played a key role in both the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. When she took the potion, she was out cold, no heartbeat or anything. Good potion, it worked and she woke up later. But Romeo actually thought Juliet was dead.
In this quote, Friar Lawrence talks about how he gave Juliet the potion to fake her death. ¨Then I gave her a sleeping potion which so took effect as I intended, for it wrought on her the form of death.¨ (Shakespeare 5.3.223-224). Friar Lawrence understands how the potion would make Juliet appear as if she is dead. The friar also allowed her to take the potion before Romeo would be notified of the plan. This little planning from Friar Lawrence is the reason for Romeo and juliet’s deaths.
Friar Lawrence made the potion and made the plan to get Juliet out of the arranged marriage by faking her death. Friar did not think clearly when he made the plan. He went for the “quick fix” by just getting Juliet out of her family completely. The reason Friar married Romeo and Juliet to begin with was to unite the families, but by taking Juliet out of her family and making them believe she had died caused more sadness for the Capulets and no solution for the feud. The decision and plan Friar Lawrence came up with to fake Juliet’s death caused more problems and more deaths than the feud
Eventually, Friar told Juliet he has a solution to prevent her from marrying Paris and reunite her and Romeo. Friar Lawrence also makes a somewhat persuasion to Juliet about the vial before she makes the decision. Another reason Friar Lawrence is to be blamed leading to the death of Romeo and Juliet is because Lawrence is the one who gave Juliet the potion to fake her death and send a letter to Romeo about their pluck the mangled Tybalt from his shroud / And, in this rage, with some great kinsmans bone / As with a club, dash out my desp’rate brains'' (Shakespeare 4.1-53-55)
Friar Lawrence explains the devastation of this poison while handing it to Juliet, “Take thou this vial, being then in bed, / And this distilling liquor drink thou off; / When presently through all thy veins shall run / A cold and drowsy humor; for no pulse” (4.1.95-98). Not only was Friar Lawrence the one to give Juliet the poison, but he was also the one to create the entire plan. The plan he had fabricated had many flaws and was incredibly underthought. Giving someone poison that is capable of stopping their heart and not making sure all your bases are covered is widely negligent.

After Juliet had drunk the potion, he gave her, Friar Lawrence wrote an urgent letter to Romeo with all of the details of Juliet’s location and when she would wake up. If Friar Lawrence thought it was that the letter was very important, he should've delivered it himself, or talked to Romeo in person. When he finds out that Friar John was taking his time to deliver it, the Friar realizes his mistake by saying, “Unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood, The letter was not nice but full of charge, Of dear import, and neglecting it, May do much danger.” (5.2.18-21).

Friar Lawrence can be held accountable for this action because if he had never given Juliet the vial in the first place then Romeo would later not have heard the news from Balthasar that she was dead and frantically go down and kill himself in the capulets tomb. the angle that Friar Lawrence takes on Juliet not only later makes Juliet scared and not trust Friar Lawrence, but she also had no idea if what Friar Lawrence had said was true. the deaths of Juliet and Romeo in the tomb could have been avoided if Friar Lawrence had not given Juliet a sleeping potion in the first place once again holding him most accountable as well as never getting the news to Romeo.
Friar Lawrence is a Kind-hearted Character Kind-hearted characters are hard to recognize, especially if they make a mistake. Even if it was for the good of their heart. Sometimes even if everything goes wrong, it can still end up with the ending the main characters would want. One of Friar Lawrence’s interventions which leads to the death of Romeo and Juliet again comes from his plan to help Juliet escape her wedding with Paris. Friar Lawrence’s plan is flawed in many ways, one such flaw is sending the letter to Romeo through Friar John. After he tells Juliet about the potion, the Friar explains the next part of the plan, he states, “In the meantime, against thou shalt awake,/ Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift/ And hither shall he come,...” (4.1.14-16). It is clear the letter plays a vital role in Friar Lawrence’s plan.
