In the story, “The Devil and Daniel Webster” the main character is Daniel Webster, and he is a lawyer who helped Jabez Stone from the hands of the devil. He and the devil held the trial in Stone’s kitchen with dead jury and judge. At the end of the story, Daniel appealed to jury and the judge as men who contributed to mankind, and he saved Jabez Stone from the devil. At the same time, he saved himself from the devil. On the contrary, “The Devil and Tom Walker”, the main character, realized that his deal with the devil was bad for him, he tried to deceive the devil.

Walter Lee is a character from the play A Raisin in the Sun in which a black family tries to get out of poverty and go against stereotypes by trying to start over with their Grandpa’s life insurance money. A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry explores the concept that greed leads to being blinded by money and forgetting about one’s loved ones as shown by the climax of the play, the character of Walter Lee, and the effect that his actions have on the rest of his family. The Character of Walter Lee shows that greed blinding a person can cause him to forget about the ones he loves.
A Faustian Bargain is when someone sells their soul to the devil usually for wealth, fame, or knowledge. There are similarities in premise between “The Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving and The Devil and Daniel Webster by Stephen Vincent Benét. While there are similarities in premise, there are also differences in the way each story ended based on the men’s decisions. Both men [Jabez Stone and Tom Walker] sold their souls to the devil for wealth, but the differences lie in the ending of each story. With the help of Daniel Webster, Jabez Stone beats Old Scratch in a court case, winning his soul back while Tom Walker gets dragged to hell.

Both were written in different time periods, where certain events and happenings influenced each of the stories and their conflicts. Washington Irving wrote “The Devil and Tom Walker” during a time of economic boom (1824). Stephen Vincent Benet wrote “The Devil and Daniel Webster” during a time of economic depression (1937). Despite the stories’ titles, both have different resolutions, depictions of the devil, and saving graces in the end.
Satire is used by many famous writers to create humor and to criticize people’s unwise, and senseless actions. People will always be greedy and think they are smarter than others but this is untrue. The one who thinks he is smarter or better than the other will always end up losing in life.
Earlier when he got the idea his "smile stretched like a weary snake waking up by a fire. " The snake simile suggests the devil and evil acts, as opposed to his chance at salvation. He will choose to listen to this devil as he abandons Lucynell, an angel of Gawd, at The Hot Spot. Throughout the story Tom had showed some good in him but ultimately he was evil. He was only looking to his own advantage and did whatever he felt the need to to get there.
In the devil and Tom Walker: the Bible, Tom walker , and the swamp are shown as symbols. The Bible represents Holiness, pure goddess,and doing the right things. The swamp represents his shortcut to get to where he's at in wealth and he is willing to take the easy way out. Tom himself represents greed he is so greedy he sells his own soul to achieve wealth. In The Devil and Tom Walker greed plays an important in the story, but I think the story symbolizes the greedy American.
