Growing up / Coming of age
The Book Thief shows many characters who grew up and were coming of age during the story like how Rudy and Liesel did. Liesel and Rudy were both kids who did not know any better. Liesel has been a little girl who lost her mom and her little brother and was adopted by the Hubermann’s later on and Rudy was a little boy who has blonde hair and blue eyes who was very athletic. Rudy has a special talent, but does senseless things. Part of growing up is living up to responsibilities and mature, throughout the book people will see the differences many characters changed from beginning to end like Liesel and Rudy.
Growing up is something that any individual person goes through in life, people start getting more mature and start having more responsibilities for themselves or for people around them . Liesel was enjoying the books so much that she stole nine books throughout the novel, Liesel did not know any better. She knew what she was doing was wrong, she even got punished by her parents but that did not stop her from stealing more books. Another character that changed throughout the novel is Rudy Steiner, he made decisions that almost got him in trouble like for example The Jesse Owens Incident. Jesse Owens was an inspiration to Rudy; Death says : He smeared the charcoal on, nice and thick, till he was covered in black. Even his hair received a once over. ( Zusak, 13) Rudy wanted to be like his idol, even his color, but he got caught by his father who said he should not play dress up because he will be “taken away” for being Black or Jewish and Alex Steiner did not want
