Harry Potter Series The hero’s journey is a quest that can be seen in numerous films that are watched everyday. During this journey, the hero goes through three stages: departure, initiation, and return. Within each of these stages there are numerous things that the hero must endure. A specific example of this journey can be seen in the Harry Potter series. In these films, Harry Potter, a young wizard, embarks on a journey to Hogwarts School where he meets friends and battles evil. Before diving into the journey, it is important to label the different archetypes that will be seen throughout the quest. First and most importantly is our hero, Harry Potter. The first threshold is crossed moments after the above-mentioned conversation between Hagrid and Harry. After being told that he is in fact a Wizard, Hagrid insists that they leave. At this point, Harry pauses, glances back at the so-called family he has, and then turns away to walk out of the door after Hagrid. At this point Harry has fully embarked on his journey. The next step, the belly of the whale, is the point in which our hero becomes completely immersed in the adventure. For Harry, this moment occurs once he crosses the platform 9 ¾ in the train station for the first time and gets on the train to Hogwarts. Following this, we move into the second phase, initiation. In each of the movies that follow, Harry braves his road of trials. Although each film contains several challenges that Harry undergoes, the main trial of each film seems to be placed in the titles. For instance, in the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry’s main trial is that he must find the magical stone and keep it from his dark enemy, Voldemort, who not only serves as a shape shifter throughout this series, but at numerous times, he is also a threshold guardian as his main goal it to kill Harry
