To answer that question – no. I think that the world is full of heroes. They don’t need powers or superhuman strength, or turn green. It doesn’t matter how old they are, it doesn’t even matter if they’re living or not. Heroes are heroes because of the good they bring upon others and the good that they believe in. The people they serve can be their worst enemy, best friend or stranger; to them, it doesn’t matter who. The whole reason they do good is because they believe in it and want to make things right. Bone Gap by Laura Ruby distinguishes how having love and bravery can transform a normal person into a hero.

As he runs through the field, the ground becomes a marsh. Eventually, he’s forced to trudge through the strong, oceanic-seeming undertow. When the tide lowers, the ground starts to evolve into cornfield again where Finn eventually finds himself along the side of a dirt road. Realizing Finn seems to be back in Bone Gap he notices that it’s too nice to be Bone Gap and he becomes suspicious (292). Consequently, Finn going to the other realm is very brave of him because he did something that no one else in Bone Gap ever would have imagined doing. As he’s looking out to the road, he sees “A fleet of trucks with monster wheels, followed by other kinds of trucks – food trucks, vans, carnival rides on 18-wheelers.” (291). Once he got there he realized it was a fair – even though the fair didn’t come until August (291) – all the people were there telling him he will never find Roza. Pretty soon, everyone at the fair shifts towards Finn in unison saying “I am Roza” (293). Suddenly, his whole world seemed to come to a halt – the Scare Crow is behind Finn asking “Have you ever heard of Tilt-A-Whirl?” (296) then everything goes upside down including the people. The grass was the sky, and Finn was standing on the clouds. The people hung off the Earth “like animals hooked in a slaughterhouse before their throats were cut.” (297). The Scare Crow told Finn “There are a lot of people here. This may take a while. Maybe forever” (297) but Finn’s deep care for Roza kept him determined to find her no matter how long it took. As he swam through the sea of hanging bodies, he remembers what Petey told him about being face blind; he recognizes people by the way they move and certain features about them. He looks for Roza through all the people using his sense of touch to
