Montag is thinking about Clarisse and the hound. He is distraught and upset that his wife forgot to tell him about her death for four days. The mechanical beast poses a continued threat for Montag. Mildred is afraid of the books and the possible outcome that keeping the books will lead to.
When Montag first held the books, he knew he was doing something wrong. (anaphora) He knew his life would become running from his wife, running from society, running from the hound. (simile) It all started when a lady would not let him set her house into flames like a camper starts a bomb fire.
To begin, At first montag is the average civilian living a normal life. He does what he needs to do to survive, all the while he knows something is missing. Before he met the life changing character Clarisse, he was conformed to society just like everyone else. However, Clarisse was the spark that grew the fire of knowledge in his heart. Then when he seen a woman rather be burned alive then to live without books the spark only grew.
Some people struggle in the outside world, while others struggle in the inside world, or with themselves. In Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, the main character Guy Montag is conflicting with himself. Initially, Montag thinks that he is happy and content with his life as a fireman burning books, but after meeting a peculiar neighbor, he realizes that he is struggling internally with his happiness in his life. In the beginning of the book, Montag’s thoughts to himself illustrates himself as a satisfied man.
And then he was a shrieking blaze” (Bradbury 113). Montag’s last encounter with Beatty pushed him over the edge by first threatening to find Faber and kill him, which made Montag turn off the safety switch (STEWE-2) After killing Beatty, the government labeled Montag a criminal. “He was three hundred yards downstream when the Hound reached the river” (Bradbury 133). Montag acts against his society by running away from the punishment they have decided to give him. Montag did all of this because he was also looking for real people, people such as Clarisse.

In the novel, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, Montag, the main character, goes from loving his job to rethinking of his job. Montag came in mind that his job not only hurt him but also hurt society. He began to realize that he no longer enjoyed his job. Montag did not like the fact of knowing that his job was only hurting other people.
Is there a pleasure to burn? Guy Montag has lived a quiet life as a fireman, burning books alongside the rest of the fire squad, and has always found his work to be pleasurable (Bradbury 3). Montag takes pride in his work, and finds it empowering, saying, “his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning;” (Bradbury 3). A chance meeting a young girl named Clarisse, and the actions of a martyr willing to die for her books, light a spark in Montag that definitely wasn’t there before. Montag tells Clarisse that he has been a fireman for ten years, and never put much thought into his job.

Challenging the status quo is noble, but most often, we choose to stay within the safety of pack. Humans, like other creatures, seek solace in groups. We feel secure, included, and like we're part of a pack.
As Clarisse questions why Montag begins to think about his actions and how they affect people as well as society. The reader realizes Montag is a puppet in the dystopian society following the protocol as he is told by society. Montag’s inability to reason with what he is doing makes him gullible. Montag’s society would consider him dangerous within his society, but in reality he is escaping what is a dysfunctional.
Fahrenheit 451 Do books really harm the world or does the government dislike the idea of society turning knowledge into power? Montag was a heroic character, he did what he thought was best, despite what the laws said. Montag went against the law and sought knowledge. Despite his flaws, Montag can be considered a heroic figure.
Inspired by this new knowledge, he acts courageously in an attempt to change his life and the lives of those around him. Montag must abandon all previous views and principles he had about society to enable a change. Through the character of Montag, Bradbury suggests that individuals are courageous when they sacrifice themselves for the improvement of society, even when there is a risk of achieving nothing. Initially, Montag seems as static and obedient as all the others in this totalitarian society; however, through talking with Clarisse, Montag’s views change, causing him to question the rules around him.
Now Montag must try to find his way through this obstacle, so that the Captain doesn't catch him. Also Confronting Challenges is the most prominent because of how many problems there are in the Novel. Like how Mildred rarely talks to Montag and how everyone is addicted to tv and not books. In Fahrenheit 451, a science fiction novel by Ray Bradbury a man named Guy Montag goes against a dystopian society to pursue happiness, freedom, and knowledge. This dystopian society has banned all books, and firefighters have been transformed into book burners in hopes of creating a perfect society also known as a utopia. Although the ancient Hero’s Journey Archetype may not seem to have a lot to do do with this science fiction novel set in the future, it applies to this book more than you would expect. Throughout the book Guy Montag experiences many steps of the Hero’s Journey Archetype, as he is setting out to pursue knowledge.
One example on why Montag is an anti- hero is because he soon starts to realize that it’s time to change his society, but when his anger comes in play he realizes that he the best changes he made aren’t the best changes(page 71 ) “ They read the long afternoon through while the cold November rain fell from the sky upon the quiet house” The quote provides proof that Montag is starting to want to change his society because he is doing something that is illegal he is reading. In the beginning Montag was against reading books he was a member of the fire company that burned them. now he reading a book with millie and he is now starting to enjoy the books. Page 81) ‘Someone who may have been a friend was burned less than Twenty-four hours ago” This is making him change the society because he doesn’t think people should be burned for reading book.
