The Better King
Hrothgar does a better job at protecting his people, he’s dedicated to his job and he likes making his people happy, therefore Hrothgar is the better king. Even though Hrothgar had to get Beowulf to kill Grendel it was for the good of his people and he knew that to protect them he would need help. Hrothgar had “a force that grew to be a mighty army” (67). This proves that Hrothgar is the better king because “a force that grew to be a mighty army” indicates that his people stand behind him no matter what and that he would stop at nothing to protect his people. A counter argument could be if Hrothgar is the better king than why does he need Beowulf’s help, well sometimes the greatest need help, and even Beowulf realized at some point he needed help and accepts Wulfgar’s help to defeat the dragon, unfortunately that results in his death, therefore leaving his people without a leader. “Wonder of the world forever (70)”. Hrothgar made a mead hall for his people, “a wonder of the world forever”. He has the mead hall made as a gift to his people. “It becomes his throne-room and there he would disperse his God given goods to his people” (lines 68-73). Hrothgar wanted to make something that would please his people and he felt a mead hall was just right. People could say that Hrothgar is just putting on a show for people and he doesn’t really care about his people. However Hrothgar does show that he cares about his people in many different forms not just gifts, and he is an excellent model for people to look up to. Hrothgar wants his kingdom to be a happy place and by keeping his people happy, they have more respect for him, unlike Beowulf who didn’t care either way if the people were happy as long as he got the glory he was
