It is human nature to survive, even if the cost is killing innocent people. Abigail in the play is a prime example of this in society. She sells out her friends and towns people to the judge just so she does not die herself. This is still seen in society today in many ways, and Abigail is one of the biggest reasons for the Crucible happening. Sometimes good people can surprise you when they are put in a tough decision. Proctor states to Abigail, “She only pretended to faint, your excellency. They’re all marvelous pretenders.” (66) People will go to extreme lengths to survive that aren’t imaginable until put in the given situation. This is repeating its self in history without people even knowing it. I feel like these are words of wisdom to live by. You can try to give people like Abigail a chance to prove herself and confess the sins she has done. However, she just continues to lie about the predicament she got herself into. There is a certain point in life when you realize it is your fault for believing in the person who keeps doing wrong. In the play Proctor realizes the only way to stop someone doing these things is to tell of the lies they are speaking of. Proctor yells at Abigail, “I have rocky proof in the documents that you knew that poppet were none of my wife’s; and that you yourself bade Mary Warren stab that needle into it.” (50) There are many more examples of things she lied about like, having adultery with Proctor, saying everyone bewitched her, and pleading not guilty to witchcraft. Along these same lines, in today’s society people kill other people and find ways to try and get out of the situation and lie their way to freedom and overall life. People like this don’t really think about the negatives. They think what they are doing is
