Religious Hypocrisy in "As I Lay Dying"
Throughout the book "As I Lay Dying" the characters turn towards their religion during difficult times. Their religion is mostly used for comfort when faith and provisions are needed instead of what it is supposed to be used for. Each character faces opportunities that test and require them to question their faith. The novel uses multiple characters to reveal the effects of religious hypocrisy.
Cora is a well religious woman who respects and believes in the bible. Cora sings hymns, quote the bible and lead God centered encouragements regularly. "Let the Lord comfort you." Even though in most house holds the father and male figure lead the family towards their faith, Anse struggled with his faith. (Theology of Business). The death of Addie in the play began to take a toll on Anse. Anse has always been one to be strong during difficult situations. However, the hurt that was inside began to show. "Put him longways on his belly, like a snake." (Faulkner 38). This shows that Anse pushed the caring and thoughtful part of him away and started to build the wall with not only his kids but also the people around him. "I suppose it's having been a part of Anse for so long that she cannot even make that change." (Faulkner 38). Anse is a well-known Christian and he guides his children towards Christ. The hypocrisy with his religious beliefs shows during the difficult time because rather than looking for comfort and healing throughout Christ, Anse suppresses his relationship with his children and his friends. "Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."(Isaiah 41:10).
