Hypocrisy runs deep in many citizens of Maycomb. Harper Lee has included many examples of hypocrisy in the novel. This is seen in characters throughout the story. Characters like Aunt Alexandra, Mrs. Gates, Mayella Ewell, Bob Ewell and Mrs. Merriweather all exhibit hypocrisy. All these characters prove their hypocrisy throughout the story. Mrs. Gates, a school teacher, is a perfect example of a hypocrite. During Scout’s current issues class the subject of Adolf Hitler comes up. Mrs. Gates compares America and Germany, “...We are a democracy and Germany is a dictatorship” (Lee 245). She then goes on to note that “Over here we don’t believe in persecuting anybody.
