In To Kill a Mockingbird, ignorance, prejudice, and racism is all illustrated by the public education system, neighbors, and the trial. We all know that one person who refuses to accept that everybody’s equal. Go ahead and think of them. Now, picture this: You are in a courtroom on trial for the rape of a 19 year old white girl. You know that you didn’t do it, and there is overwhelming evidence pointing toward the fact that you didn’t. Yet, you’re worried. Very worried. Why are you worried? Because you’re black. It could accurately describe plenty of people from now and throughout history. Presidential elections, anyone? Anyways, I thought I knew quite a bit about ignorance and how it worked before I read this book, but now I know that I know a lot more than I did. Ignorance is closely related to hypocrisy as well. Hypocrisy is when you stand against something, but do it anyways (or vice versa). An example of hypocrisy and ignorance from To Kill a Mockingbird is when Scout’s teacher: Miss Gates is addressing Hitler and the Nazis. She says: “We don’t believe in persecuting anyone.” We, being the American people. Racism: The belief that all members of a race possess characteristics or abilities exclusive to that race. Another form of prejudice, and where the word: stereotype belongs. One example of racism in the modern day is Donald Trump. He believes that all Muslims are evil and want to kill us, or that all Mexicans are no good rapists. This, of course is not true. Sure, there are some Muslims part of radical extremist groups hell bent on killing us and sure there are Mexicans who are in fact rapists, but the point is that one, or even a few people can not represent a whole group of people.
