Is being indifferent necessary for a human to remain sane? Many people would like to believe that if they heard of injustice they would speak out against it, but more often than not people choose the easy way, ignoring it. Often at times, people will ignore a problem so they can go to sleep with a clear conscience or so that they can give themselves peace of mind because it is harder to worry, to do something and to speak out. When you choose the easy way in order to remain sane you are choosing indifference. Indifference is to have no response, it is to ignore inaction. While being indifferent to the problem may give you mental peace of mind or overall sanity, the problems don't go away, the victims still suffer. For example, Moishe the Beadle was expelled by the Nazis but managed to return to Sighet and desperately tried to warn the Jews but was only met with indifference as Elie observes, "He [Moishe the Beadle] spoke only of what he had seen. But people not only refused to believe his tales, they refused to listen" (Wiesel 7). In other words, the Jews of Sighet choosing indifference only caused them harm. Specifically, when they chose to stay in Sighet despite the warnings and then when the Nazis came to Sighet and forced them into ghettos and then transported them to concentration camps. The Jews of Sighet bearded witness to the dangers of indifference. In this case, indifference was so easily chosen because Moishe's suffering was not affecting the Jews of Sighet. In consequence, when Moishe the Beadle was silenced it not only made him feel meaningless, but it also took away an advantage the Jews may have had against the Nazis. In all, if they chose to listen to Moishe's warnings, maybe the Jews of Sighet could have fled and escaped the
