Since September 11, 2001, the United States government signed the Patriot Act approving the surveillance of phones and other devices in the US. In the novel “1984”, George Orwell tells a story of what the world would be like if an oligarchy form of government became too powerful. In today’s world, our technology has surpassed the scale of Big Brother’s because the world governments are fighting a war against terrorism which hides in plain sight. The novel “1984”, describes a story where an oligarchy type government known as Big Brother and the Party has taken over the world and is separated into three different nations: Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia. In Oceania, Big Brother has devices known as telescreens that keeps tabs on what people do at home, at work, or even what they write in a journal. Individualism does not exist in this new world, if a person does not follow the ways of the Party; Big Brother makes that person disappear. …show more content…

In the article, “Long Beach Police to Use 400 Cameras Citywide to Fight Crime”, the Police Chief Jim McDonnell said,” This is not a case of Big Brother is watching, and the police are using technological advantage to improve the safety of the city.”(Winton). This quote is meant to reassure the people of Long Beach that their safety is the top priority of the police. In Big Brother’s case, the surveillance was used to stop people who meant to produce change to the world they were living in for the greater
