Have you ever been indecisive about anything? Such as whether you should have a smoothie or pancakes for breakfast. But what if you had no choice? Sometimes having to choose something can be difficult, but is a necessary skill in life. Conformity restricts you from having the option to choose, which in some cases can be bad.
Weather it comes to saying “hi” to an employee when you walk into a store, close the door behind you when you walk out of a room, or even simply washing your hands after using the restroom, society, stereotypes, and the media can mold and shift your ideas, morals, and opinions rapidly. For example in the novel “The Giver”it illustrates that Jonas the protagonist lives in this somewhat “perfect” community where there are no mistakes (tolerated) and no emotion other than happiness. However, one may disagree and say “social norms help us and teach us new things”. In reality the “teaching” could be something bad but no one would know because they are already blinded by their previous words and are clueless. In Jonas's Community they live in
Dam Nation- The documentary Dam Nation is a multi-issue, semi-historical argument against dams in the United States. While it addressed many reasons why dams are detrimental, it did not discuss the any particular problem in depth, nor did it offer serious counter-arguments in support of dams (I don’t consider political stump speeches to be a fair representation of an opposing perspective). As a critical viewer, this biased representation made me suspicious of all the arguments. How can I accept the credibility of someone who won’t describe the whole picture?
In the end of chapter 22, it said, “He wept because he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel, he no longer cared about himself.” (Lowry 218). This piece of evidence shows that Jonas, had he not been trying his hardest to keep Gabriel alive, would have been fine with dying due to the fact he didn’t care about his life or what happened to him. The only thing keeping him alive was his reliance on the fact that Gabe needed him which proves that he relies on Gabe just to keep surviving. In addition there were multiple other quotes proving this such as , “The Giver hugged him.
Stop, think about this for a moment. You are in a community that cannot see color, has no feelings, no choices to be made on your own, and no diversity between each other. How would you feel? Jonas, a twelve year old boy and the Giver have to live in this community knowing all this. As they live in this futuristic dystopian community they share memories of the past and what is elsewhere.
In the book The Giver, it follows the life of a boy living in a society where there is no such thing as color and extreme emotion. There is no such thing as independent thought, and it is seen as a utopian society as it is rid of everything that can harm people. The protagonist learns of the memories of past civilizations and realizes how cold the world he lives in is and seeks to bring back those memories to his community. The world is a grand place, it is filled with pain and euphoria. As a result of not having emotions, it would create a desolate world where people are not living, but rather surviving without choice.
Imagine living in a world with no freedom, choice, individuality, and color. Would you want to live in a world like this? Most of you would have said no, but a boy named Jonas has no choice, but to adhere to his community’s rules. In the book and the movie, “The Giver”, by Louis Lowery, Jonas finds it difficult to accept his community’s way of life. However, after he becomes the receiver of memory, he challenges the community after discovering what the world used to be like before sameness.
Debate-written Assignment, Conformity The idea of conformity is to eliminate individualism and to unite the society together, making it a safer place for the citizens to live, and develop in. A place that has no war, no hunger and no pain, where citizens create strong bonds between each other. The Giver written by Lois Lowry represents the idea of conformity in the society where they try to keep everyone the same as each other by following the same rules and trying to avoid having people stand out by receiving daily pills to lose the feeling of inclination between each other.
The Giver Essay How would you feel if you lived in a community whare thare was no diversity, no choice, and no memories? Well that's how it is for Jonas. Jonas lives in a community with his Mother, Father, little sister, and Gabriel a baby his father has taken in. Jonas thinks his world is perfect that is until he turns 12 and is selected to be the next giver and receiver special training from the Giver. With the memories comes great pain.
Jonas’s society is extremely different than the one we live in today. The first difference between The Giver and our society is the number of family members. In the book they can only have two kids, one boy and one girl; however, in America we are free to have as many kids as we would want. The second
These days, everyone is telling kids and adults alike to “be themselves” and be happy with who they are. Although there are a lot of differences, it creates diversity and appreciation for others. In the novel The Giver, author Lois Lowry creates a society that is built upon the fact that nobody is different. There is hardly any individual choice, freedom, and definitely no individuality. This creates a peaceful, orderly community, where everyone seems happy to let others decide things for them, and the only ones in charge of anything are the authority.
In the book "The Giver," the theme of sameness vs difference is a central theme. The community in which the protagonist, Jonas, lives is built on the principles of sameness, where everyone has the same clothes, houses, jobs, and even memories. The community values conformity, predictability, and stability over individuality, creativity, and change. This concept is emphasized in the quotes, “We’ve never completely mastered Sameness” and “Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness.”
This connects to Lowry’s warning because in Jonas’ society there is no chance to learn through the big mistakes that are made. In the society in The Giver, emotions were not felt, clothing was not one’s own choice, and forcing people out of the society was acceptable. All people should learn that giving up pain and difficult decisions could mean giving up freedom. Diversity in a community is a good thing and should be celebrated. Lois Lowry was trying to send the message to her readers that being their unique selves leads to true
He is under sameness and the influence of the community. Jonas is chosen to receive feelings, colors, and emotions from memories. As time goes by Jonas sees the community not as a utopia but a horrible place. Jonas wants to change
The giver by Lois Lowry- Analytical essay ________________________________________________________ What if we lived in a world of peace and equality? What if we lived in a world with no differences? A world with no social classes and inequality. That sounds pretty amazing doesn’t it?
