Inhumanity in The Lottery and in life The short story, The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, is about a village that takes part in this annual ritual called the lottery, but instead of the usual winning and receiving a heaping of money, you get pelted with stones until you are no longer breathing. Harsh right? There is actually a harsh reality to this story. It is shown in The Lottery that society and humans are very inhumane at times and that they will follow along side others in traditions with out a sight to what is actually going on. Since the lottery is randomized, everyone has an equal chance at being slaughtered even though most of them have done absolutely nothing to really deserve it. Tessie is a housewife that is well known in the community and her own friends and family still relentlessly stone her to death. At once all of her family has revealed their papers, and it leaves her paper to reveal the single black dot of death that everyone in the village is fearful of. Assuming that since she is “marked for death”, she deserves to die. They start acting, as though the person that she was once before no longer exists, and she is is not even a human being anymore once that is revealed. She is soon instantly invisible to everyone in the crowd. It is as if she puts a bag over her head and no one knows who she is. She is killed instantaneously with out even a blink of an eye or a questionable thought. This type of inhumanity is shown in most people everyday life. If it is not you that is doing it, then you may see someone doing it. People are constantly judging people just because they are of different background or how they look. It is like people are putting a black dot on to someone that erases who they actually are as a person and makes them just a race, a gender, or a religion. Even in school, teenagers will judge someone just
