Law enforcement There have been instances of injustice demonstrated by law enforcement officials pertaining to black individuals. A disproportionate amount of black people are being subject to brutality and incarceration due to racial profiling. More black individuals in prison means an increase in the chance of the decision of the death sentence for black individuals, depending on what is being accused of them. This can be justified based on the belief that blacks are simply committing more crime, but the truth of the matter is, black people are often targeted based on racism by officers and this is why they represent such a large proportion of people in correctional facilities. The events we have witnessed over and over again “ I thought he had a gun” “I feared for my life” always pointing a finger to someone who didn 't even have a criminal record. In this world today, there are many cases of police brutality going on right now. For some cases, police shouldn’t have acted the way that they did. There are multiple reasons for why police brutality occur and must be removed for it to occur less. Police brutality happens to all races, but the main race is African American people.
Throughout history, the failure of the government to protect black people from ruthless enforcement officers, forced blacks to act in their own interests. During the 1930s, the National Negro Congress organized massive rallies against police brutality, the Black Panther was created to stem the tide of police abuse, and in the 1970s the Congress of African Peoples sponsored the “Stop Killer Cops” Campaigns (Fitzgerald, 2007). The list goes on and on of groups and campaigns that African Americans formed to protect themselves from white supremacy and most importantly police brutality. Almost every year hundreds to thousands of African Americans are killed due to police brutality. Over like a hundred of African Americans were killed this year because of police brutality. Everyone who has been a part of police brutality, their families have to go on with life knowing someone really special to them is not in their life anymore. Many families are devastated this year because they have lost a family member or a spouse due to this situation. Many African Americans think that police brutality is not right.
These authors conducted two studies to investigate how Blacks experience encounters with police officers due to stereotypes that depict Blacks as criminals, expecting that such encounters induce Blacks to feel stereotype threat such concern about being treated unfairly by police officers. The first study instructed Black and White participants to explain what they perceive and how they feel when interacting with police. The White men didn’t feel the police presented a threat to them. While the Black participants responded with their fear of feeling they would be accused of some type of wrongdoing. There is a point in everyone’s life where they are scared of a police officer pulling them over. The fear is usually getting a costly ticket or taken under arrest; However, darker skinned citizens now have to worry about police brutality. Police brutality is the use of excessive and unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. Over the years, the country has been exposed to the truth about what minorities face when pulled over by a racist police officer. Most of the victims from the police mistreatment are from minority groups, therefore, race plays a key role in police brutality.
However, research demonstrates that often times men of color are treated harshly which leads to negative perceptions of police officers. Police brutality is a crime that is has been surfacing in the news recently. Some people are just starting to realize that these injustices against the black community really occur, while others are well aware. The recent shootings, different run-ins with officers being filmed while doing such harmful actions against African American men is an example of police brutality and, that reminds us that as a society work needs to be done to improve police and community relations. A black male cannot even walk down the street on a cold night because he might be a suspect from something or he may be of danger to the people around.
Police brutality and racial profiling against has became a huge problem in America. In 2016 more than 250 african americans were killed by police officers. Two thousand and fifteen an estimate of 306 blacks were killed. Mainly our african american men have been killed innocently by an officer because the color of his skin.
As African Americans we have a target on our backs one rooted in hate. However, it is our job to continue fighting for our right and our place in the world to be known. Many white officers do not receive any type of sentencing in court especially in cases that include the lost lives of one of our own. They live in fear of the threat that we pose especially when during slavery times we talked in letters or through songs rather than disobeying master. Additionally, this behavior is what we have tried to overcome, but we are constantly being judged because of the color of our skin.
