“Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life . . . I have given you my soul; leave me my name” (Crucible)! The people that were accused during the Salem Witch Trials lost not only their lives, but they also lost their names. They were treated so poorly simply due to one person falsely accusing them. This tragic injustice has happened over and over throughout history. The main “witch trial” that plagues our society today, is the false accusations against Muslims pertaining to terrorism. While attending The University of Bridgeport Balayla was harassed many times by another student. She had a complained to many teachers and filed a formal complaint, but nothing was done on her behalf. Meanwhile, the person she filed the complaint against had begun to spread rumors that she was a terrorist. The University ignored her complaint and brought in the FBI to question Balayla. They found that she was not a terrorist and that it was indeed a false accusation. The young man knew that he would hurt Balyla’s reputation, and that is exactly what he wanted to happen. This situation is very similar to how Abigail accuses people of witchcraft because she is scared to be whipped for dancing in the forest. The boy was scared that he would get in trouble so he wanted to make it so no one would believe her. By spreading that she was a terrorist it discredited her accusation, but it also had a big impact on her life. Another similarity between these to “witch trials” is the fact that they destroyed people’s lives. After the witch trials those who had not been hung still faced a lot of persecution. They could not carry on life normally after so many of their friends and family had betrayed them. Today after someone is accused of terrorism, it is almost impossible to survive. Many cannot find jobs or places to live. Once you are accused of being a terrorist no one will treat you the same
