The novel “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas features the theme of injustice throughout the book. Injustice means the lack of justice or fairness in a situation. An example of this is when Khalil was wrongfully murdered by Officer 115 for having a broken taillight. Officer 115 shot Khalil. Because Khalil moved to make sure Starr was okay, officer 115 also lied about the encounter with Starr and Khalil, saying that they were swearing at him and acting threatening. Officer 115 was judging Khalil and Starr because of their race, then lying about the encounter. This is one of the many acts of injustice in the book “The Hate U Give”. The theme of injustice appears throughout “The Hate U Give.” Injustice means lack of fairness and justice. For example, “...we didn't do anything." Khalil didn't even have a gun.” (Thomas, 20). One of the many times injustice appears in “The Hate U Give” was after Khalil's death, when Starr and Uncle Carlos were talking about what Officer (115) Brian’s father said when talking about Officer Brian's experience with Khalil. In the book, it states “...And at the end of the day, you don’t kill someone for opening a car door...” (Thomas, 14). This shows that even Uncle Carlos, who is also a cop, thinks that officer Brian shouldn't have killed Khalil for checking on Starr. Another example of injustice is when King was talking to Starr's dad, Maverick, about Khalil's death and Starr talking to investigators about witnessing Khalil's death. In the text it states “...They try to find out more about the person who died than the person who shot them...” (Thomas, 15). This shows that investigators are leaning more towards officer Brian's side than the witness, Starr, by not investigating officer Brian, and instead investigating whether or not Khalil was a drug dealer and a King
