The goal of the United States Criminal Justice System is to deliver justice for all. Justice meaning to convict and punish those who are guilty while protecting the innocent. On many occasions, the justice system has failed to reach this goal by doing the opposite of its purpose and serving injustice. The justice system fails when it allows false arrests, malicious prosecutions and denial of a speedy trial to innocent people. Injustice is an important issue in the United States because it negatively affects the lives of those involved. The effect of a failed justice system causes innocent people to feel “heartache of having missed so much of life” after serving time for a crime they did not commit (Baca 567). Often these innocent prisoners serve their time in solitary confinement. The isolation causes them to lose their sense of freedom, which can develop into a personality or mental disorder. It is unfair that the people meant to keep them safe assault them. In Baca's autobiography “Coming into Language,” he describes seeing a person being abused at the county jail. As he was mopping the floor in front of the booking desk, the detectives kneed an old drunk and handcuffed him to the booking bars. Baca says the man’s shrill screams raked his nerves like a hacksaw on a bone. His screams were a "desperate protest of his dignity against their inhumanity" (Baca 567). As the man tried to rise, the detectives laughed and kneed him again. Government officials should protect inmates not harm them. The unreasonable force used by them makes it difficult for the inmates to feel safe. The abuse caused by government officials in prisons happen often and is unacceptable. It is not justified when the officers abuse their power and face no consequences. These issues are important because prisoners should get treated as humans. The mistake of breaking the law should not lessen their
