In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, innocence is represented in various ways. The society that the characters live in affects their behavior and are ultimately a product of their environment. There are four mockingbirds, they are Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, and Jem Finch. The first mockingbird we have is Jem Finch. “ He was running, running towards us with no child’s steps” pg. 351. Jem yelled at scout to run. “Run, Scout!, Run!, Run! Jem screamed” pg. 351. He was fighting off bob ewell so scout could get away. Jem was protecting scout from the attacker. Boo Radley is a character that shows innocence. “To my way of thinking, Mr. Finch, taking one man who’s done you and this town a great service an draggin’ him with his shy ways into the limelight” pg. 369 and 370. Boo is shy and not used to all the attention. “It’s a sin and I’m not about to have it on my head… But not this man, Mr.Finch” pg. 370. Besides he lives in the shadows. Boo saved scout and jem from being attacked by bob ewell. There are many ways Boo shows innocence. Boo put a blanket over scout to protect her from the fire. “Your right. We’d better keep this and the blanket to ourselves” pg. 96. “ Someday maybe scout can say thank you… To who boo radley” pg. 96. Scout and jem are Boo’s kids.
